Do you use a lot of pens? Do you use just two or three pens?
We wanted to make a single pocket case for an essential two to three pens. Crossgrain leather with calfskin and pigskin lining. Handmade in Japan.

17.5 x 5 cm / 6.9 x 2"

Crossgrain Leather

We named this leather ‘Crossgrain’ for the pattern embossed on the surface. These crossing lines help small scratches that appear with use to blend in more easily. Because of its strength and thickness steer leather is often used for items that need to be durable. This leather is vegetable tanned using tannins from the mimosa tree. Vegetable tanning takes more time but does not use the toxic compounds needed for chrome tanned leather.

How we dye our leather

There is quite a bit of variation from skin to skin and even within the same skin. The typical way to make leather color uniform is to cover the surface with thick synthetic fillers and pigment coatings, covering the natural variations in surface and color. Unfortunately this finish does not allow scratches to blend in or improve over time. Postalco leather is colored using aniline dyes. Aniline dyes soak into the leather leaving visible the natural variation in grain and texture. The more aniline dyed leather is used, the better the surface patina gets over time. Each skin is different: a faint stripe-like pattern, called ‘tora’ in Japanese is a natural effect due to the way the dye soaks in to the various parts of the skin. Each skins ‘tora’ is different. Making Veg tanned and Aniline dyed leather is more expensive and time consuming but produces beautiful leathers.

Inside leather

Calfskin is also vegetable tanned and aniline dyed. The grain is very fine and tightly packed allowing it to be durable and soft at the same time. With use it will continue to soften and develop a patina.

Lining

Why use leather lining inside the pockets? Your eyes may not see it but your hands do. Pigskin feels great as a lining material and will last much longer than fabric linings.

Carry everywhere
Fits comfortably in hand and will soften with use.

Easy access
Constructed to allow the pocket to open wide so you can easily reach your favorite pen.

Snaps closed
The flap has a snap closure to securely hold your pens. Our snap is cut from solid brass to age well. The thin line design is inspired by the texture of fingerprint grip.

Keep your pens safe
Pigskin lining so your pens can stay protected from scratches.

Better with use
Made from three kinds of leather. Crossgrain, calfskin, and pigskin so it ages beautifully.

Learning from Japan
The craftspeople, suppliers, and small workshops found in Japan make things not to be found anywhere else. We are fortunate to work with family businesses that are so focused on their craft. Don’t put Postalco items on a shelf or in a drawer. Their beauty is revealed through daily use. They will help you feel good at home and be ready in a meeting.
